
The LOMIS project (Low Frequency Microwave Modelling of Ice Sounding and Retrieval Algorithms) is an ESA project carried out by IGE-UGA in collaboration with the University of Trento, CNR-IFAC, and INRIA. It focuses on modeling low-frequency microwave emission and scattering from ice fields to support satellite remote sensing. The project creates open-source tools to estimate key ice-sheet properties (such as internal temperature profiles, ice layers, and bedrock features) for upcoming ESA missions like CryoRad and STRATUS.
Within LOMIS, the RSLab team at the University of Trento leads the work on active microwave modeling and ice structure retrieval. Drawing on its background with radar sounders such as RIME, SRS, and STRATUS, RSLab uses simulation tools like ray-tracing and the Multilayer Coherent Simulator to model radar echoes. The team also uses AI techniques to match simulated radargrams with real radar data, enabling automated detection of subsurface layers, bedrock topography, and clutter.
